Can you personalise a boat registration number in Queensland?
The Queensland Government’s boat registration page says that once your boat is registered, registration numbers are allocated to it. We could not find a published scheme for personalised vessel registration numbers on qld.gov.au or msq.qld.gov.au (checked October 2026).
If you want to ask whether a particular number is possible, contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads on 13 23 80. Do not order stickers for a number TMR has not issued to your boat.
For comparison, NSW does run a personalised vessel number scheme. See personalised boat rego NSW.
Personalised plates for your boat trailer
Your boat trailer is road-registered separately from the boat. Personalised Plates Queensland says personalised plates can be displayed on small trailers, including boat trailers and jet-ski trailers. That is a road number plate for the trailer, not the registration number displayed on the boat’s hull.
What you can personalise on your QLD rego stickers
You can’t change the number itself, but you can choose how it looks, as long as it still meets the display rules in section 37 of the Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Regulation 2016:
- above the waterline when the boat is afloat, permanently displayed and legible from 30m away
- dark characters on a light background, or light characters on a dark background
- boats capable of planing (other than PWC): both sides, at least 150mm high
- personal watercraft: both sides, at least 100mm high
- all other boats: both sides or the stern, at least 75mm high.
Within those rules, choose from 24 colours, a range of fonts and an optional outline in our designer. You can also add a matching boat name, which is the usual way owners personalise a registered boat.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a personalised boat rego in Queensland?
The Queensland Government says registration numbers are allocated when you register your boat, and we could not find a published personalised vessel-number scheme. Call TMR on 13 23 80 to confirm for your situation.
Can I put personalised plates on my boat trailer in QLD?
Personalised Plates Queensland says personalised plates can be displayed on small trailers, including boat and jet-ski trailers. These are road plates for the trailer and do not change the boat's registration number.
What size do QLD boat registration numbers need to be?
Under section 37 of the Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Regulation 2016: at least 150mm on both sides for boats capable of planing, 100mm on both sides for PWC, and 75mm on both sides or the stern for other boats.
Can I use any colour or font for my QLD rego numbers?
The regulation requires dark characters on a light background or light on dark, permanently displayed and legible from 30m. Pick a clear font and a colour that contrasts strongly with your hull.
