Vinyl numbers or a paint-on stencil?
Cut vinyl numbers
Your registration is cut from marine vinyl and supplied pre-spaced on application tape. This is the quickest option for clean, smooth PVC tubes and for the rigid hull of a RIB.
Reverse-cut stencil
The characters are cut out of a solid vinyl mask. You apply it, paint the numbers with a paint made for your tube fabric, then peel the mask away. Owners often choose this for Hypalon (CSM) tubes, where vinyl adhesion can be less reliable. See stencil boat rego numbers.
This is product advice, not a legal requirement. Test adhesion on a small, hidden area first, and follow your tube manufacturer’s guidance on adhesives and paints.
What height do inflatable rego numbers need to be?
Registered inflatables follow the same display rules as other boats in your state. Height depends on the state and the type of vessel. For example, in NSW powerboats need at least 150mm, and in Queensland boats capable of planing need at least 150mm on both sides, while boats that can’t plane need 75mm on both sides or the stern.
Check the registration number size by state table, then confirm with your state authority before ordering.
Applying vinyl to inflatable tubes
- Inflate the tube to its normal working pressure so the surface is firm and the numbers aren’t stretched later.
- Clean with mild soap and water, dry completely, then wipe with isopropyl alcohol to remove wax, silicone or UV-protectant residue.
- Apply in the shade, working from the centre outwards, and don’t stretch the vinyl around tight curves.
- Allow at least 72 hours before deflating, folding or rolling the boat.

Frequently asked questions
Do vinyl rego stickers stick to inflatable boats?
Marine vinyl generally bonds well to clean, smooth PVC tubes. Hypalon (CSM) can be harder for adhesives, so test a small area first or use a reverse-cut stencil and paint the numbers instead.
What is a reverse-cut stencil?
The registration characters are cut out of a solid vinyl mask. You apply the mask, paint through it with a suitable paint, then remove the mask to leave painted numbers.
Do inflatable boats need registration numbers?
It depends on your state and the boat's engine. Each state sets its own registration threshold, so check our state boat rego law pages or ask your state maritime authority.

Choose the style that fits your boat: solid one-line rego for most legal displays, outline multi-stroke lettering, round two-line designs (check compliance), jetski / PWC, or a custom boat name.
