How personalised vessel numbers work in NSW
NSW lets you personalise an existing vessel registration. According to Service NSW and the NSW Government:
- The number can be up to six letters and/or numbers and must always be followed by the letter N, for example FISHN or ABC123N.
- Numbers are subject to availability, and Transport for NSW can refuse combinations it considers offensive.
- You apply in person at a Service NSW Centre with the Application to Personalise an Existing Vessel Registration form, proof of identity, your current registration details and certificate, and payment. Your signature must be witnessed by a JP or authorised witness.
- The NSW Government fees page lists a personalised registration at $230 and reserving a personalised number at $33. Check the fees page for the current amount before you apply.
On the application you declare that, once approved, you will remove the existing numbers and display the personalised number in the prescribed size and location.
NSW display rules for your new number
Transport for NSW says the registration number must be displayed:
- on both sides of the vessel, or on the transom if it is a sailing boat
- in solid, clear text in a colour that contrasts with the hull
- in numerals and uppercase letters
- at least 150mm high for powerboats, and at least 100mm high for sailing boats and PWC
- well above the normal waterline so it can be seen at all times.
Full details are on our NSW boat rego laws page.
Ordering your personalised number stickers
- Wait for approval. We recommend ordering only once Service NSW has confirmed your personalised number. Your first choice may already be taken.
- Enter the full number, including the trailing N, in the designer. The N is part of the registration number, so we cut it at the same height as the other characters.
- Choose your height (150mm for powerboats, 100mm for sailing boats and PWC), then choose one of 24 colours that contrasts with your hull.
- Remove the old numbers before applying the new set. See our removal guide.
Standard orders are dispatched in 1–2 business days. For a jet ski, use the NSW jet ski rego stickers page.
