Australian Capital Territory — No ACT Boat Registration Scheme

Last reviewed: September 2026

Always verify current requirements with Access Canberra before ordering or relying on stickers for compliance.

Access Canberra does not have a boat licence or registration scheme. Powered boats used on ACT lakes and Googong Reservoir need registration issued by another state or territory, and you display hull numbers to that issuing state’s published rules.

The rules at a glance

Do not treat 150mm / 100mm as an ACT legal height. Order stickers to the issuing state’s size.

What Access Canberra actually says

Access Canberra does not have a boat licence or registration scheme. There is no ACT-issued hull number and no ACT 150mm / 100mm display law. If you use a powered boat on ACT lakes or Googong Reservoir, you register it with another Australian state or territory and follow that issuing authority’s display rules (NSW, VIC, QLD, and so on).

What size stickers should I order?

  • Use the issuing state’s height: If the boat is registered in NSW, use NSW sizes; if Queensland, use Queensland s37 classes; and so on. We do not invent an ACT 150/100 rule.
  • Common interstate heights (for reference only, not ACT law): NSW powerboats 150mm, NSW sailing/PWC 100mm; Queensland planing 150 / PWC 100 / other 75.

Where to Place the Numbers

  • Registration requirement: Powered boats used on ACT lakes need registration from another state. Display that state’s numbers in the manner that state requires.
  • Visible from both sides: The registration number must be clearly visible and legible from both sides of the vessel, or from a vantage point defined by the waterway rules.
  • Above the waterline: Place the number in a conspicuous position above the waterline where it remains legible when the boat is underway, away from bow flare, spray, rails or fittings.

Colour and Layout

  • Solid block font: Characters should be in a colour contrasting with the hull background — white on dark hulls, black on light hulls.
  • Straight horizontal line: Lay the number out in a straight horizontal line rather than curved or stacked.
  • Durable material: Use marine-grade vinyl for durability in sun, salt water and general wear.

Why it matters: Correctly displayed numbers make it easier for marine patrols, waterway authorities and rescue services to identify vessels quickly. Numbers that are too small, obscured, curved or poorly contrasted can delay identification — leading to compliance issues or reduced safety in emergencies.

What to Check Before You Buy

When you order registration number stickers for ACT use, check that:

  • Character height matches the issuing registration authority — not an invented ACT 150mm / 100mm rule.
  • The design can be applied in a straight line and on both sides of the boat.
  • The colour contrasts strongly with your boat's hull for maximum visibility.
  • The material is marine-grade adhesive vinyl designed for outdoor, marine conditions.

Final Word

Following proper display rules for your boat registration numbers in the ACT ensures compliance, visibility and safety. Choosing the right size, layout, colour contrast and durable material protects your vessel and your experience on the water. If in doubt, consult the local marine or waterway authority for clarification.

Order Stickers to the Issuing State’s Size

There is no ACT boat registration scheme. Choose the product page for the state that issued your number (NSW, VIC, QLD, and so on) and cut vinyl to that state’s published heights. We are not Access Canberra and products are not government-certified.
