The rules at a glance
Numbers must be in one straight continuous line, in a colour that contrasts strongly with the hull.
What Victoria Requires
Boating on Victorian waters requires more than just a licence — your vessel must display its registration number correctly. According to the Marine Safety Regulations 2022 (Vic) and the updated Marine Safety Regulations 2023 (Vic), all recreational and commercial vessels must meet specific display rules for registration decals and identification marks.
How Big Do the Characters Need to Be?
-
Most boats: Characters must be at least 150mm high and in proportionate breadth.
-
Jet skis (PWC): Personal watercraft may use characters no less than 100mm high.
Where to Place the Numbers
-
Forward of the beam: Identification marks must be shown on each side of the hull forward of the beam.
-
Boats: The top of the characters should be no more than 75mm below the gunwale.
-
PWCs: The top of the characters should be no more than 25mm below the gunwale.
-
Registration label: A registration label must be fixed in a clearly visible position on the outside or upper part of the vessel.
-
Keep it clear: Numbers must be visible and legible from both sides and not obstructed by fittings, rails or decals.
Colour and Layout
-
Strong contrast: The colour must contrast strongly against the hull for maximum readability.
-
One straight line: Numbers must be displayed in one straight continuous line — not curved or stacked — for clear visibility in emergencies and inspections.
-
Durable material: Use marine grade vinyl so the numbers keep their clarity over time.
Why it matters: Correctly displayed numbers are required by law so authorities can identify vessels quickly during emergencies, accidents or safety checks. Incorrect placement, stacked numbers, curved layouts or wrong sizing can lead to penalties.
