South Australia (SA) Boat Rego Sticker Laws

Last reviewed: September 2026

Always verify current requirements with Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) before ordering or relying on stickers for compliance.

A simple guide to South Australian hull-number display: length-based heights from SA.GOV.AU, both sides toward the bow, and the 50-metre underway figure that applies in SA only.

The rules at a glance

150mm Vessels 3 metres or longer
100mm Vessels under 3 metres
Both sides Toward the bow, above the waterline
50m Legible from 50 metres while underway (SA only)

Height follows vessel length, not a separate PWC or sailing-craft band. Confirm with SA.GOV.AU.

What South Australia Requires

To legally operate a recreational vessel in South Australia you must display your boat registration numbers in full compliance with Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) regulations. These rules keep vessels easily identifiable for enforcement and emergency response, protecting operators and other waterway users.

How Big Do the Characters Need to Be?

South Australia publishes length-based heights (not separate PWC or sailing 75mm bands). See SA.GOV.AU boat registration:

  • 3 metres or longer: characters at least 150mm high.
  • Under 3 metres: characters at least 100mm high.
  • 50 metres underway: numbers must remain clearly legible from about 50 metres while the vessel is underway. That figure is SA-only — Queensland uses about 30 metres, and other states do not copy this number.

Where to Place the Numbers

  • Both sides, toward the bow: Registration numbers must be displayed on both sides of the hull, toward the bow on a vertical surface.
  • Above the waterline: Numbers must be shown above the waterline and not obscured by equipment or accessories.
  • Registration label: The label must be placed in a visible position where it will not fade or peel.
  • Clear of the bow curve: Apply numbers in a high-visibility location well clear of the curve, where distortion could make them harder to read.

Colour, Font and Layout

  • Solid block font: Characters must be clear and easy to read.
  • Strong contrast: Choose a bold contrasting colour — white on dark hulls or black on light hulls.
  • One straight line: Characters must be displayed in one straight line, not stacked or curved, perfectly horizontal and evenly spaced.

Examples of non-compliant displays:

  • Numbers too small or narrow
  • Numbers positioned below the waterline
  • Colours lacking contrast, such as dark grey on black
  • Curved bow placement distorting readability

What to Check Before You Buy

When purchasing boat rego stickers for South Australian vessels, ensure the decals you buy:

  • Meet the length-based height — 150mm if the vessel is 3 metres or longer, 100mm if under 3 metres.
  • Install in a straight line (not stacked or curved).
  • Use strong contrast colouring for maximum visibility.
  • Suit your hull material — aluminium, fibreglass or polycraft.
  • Are made from premium outdoor adhesive vinyl rather than low-tack alternatives — and replace them at the first sign of fading or peeling.

Our materials: Our boat rego stickers are made from German engineered Oracal marine vinyl with 7-10 year durability for black and white options, approximately 5 years for colours and around 2 years for holographic or reflective effects.

Final Word

Correct display of your registration number ensures your vessel is legal, identifiable and safe. Using high contrast colours and correctly sized lettering above the waterline ensures visibility for rescue teams and marine patrol. If ever unsure, refer to the DIT guidelines or confirm requirements with your local marine authority.
