How to Register a Boat in Queensland
Queensland boat registration is handled by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ). Most mechanically propelled recreational vessels used on Queensland waterways must be registered before use. Registration confirms your vessel details, assigns your registration number and provides the MSQ registration label you must display on board.
To register a boat in QLD, you typically need to:
-
Confirm your vessel needs registration — most powered recreational boats, PWCs and many sailing craft require registration when used on QLD waters.
-
Apply through MSQ — submit vessel details, proof of ownership and pay the applicable registration fee via the official MSQ registration process.
-
Receive your registration number and label — MSQ assigns your Queensland boat registration number and issues the registration label for display on the vessel.
-
Display hull numbers sized to your vessel class — apply registration numbers at the s37 height for your ship type (see below).
Already registered? Once MSQ has issued your QLD boat registration, order QLD boat rego stickers sized to the published height for your vessel class — we ship across Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns and regional Queensland.

Queensland Boat Registration Display Rules
If you own a registered recreational vessel in Queensland it is mandatory to display your boat registration number clearly and correctly to comply with maritime safety legislation. These display rules are set by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) and ensure your vessel can be quickly identified during emergencies, safety checks or enforcement activity.
How Big Do the Characters Need to Be?
Queensland does not use a single 150mm height for every powered boat. Display heights follow Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Regulation 2016 s37 and qld.gov.au recreational boat registration:
-
Planing ships other than PWC: characters at least 150mm high, on both sides.
-
Personal watercraft (PWC): characters at least 100mm high, on both sides.
-
All other ships: characters at least 75mm high, on both sides or on the stern.
Numbers must sit above the waterline, contrast with the hull, and be readable from about 30 metres.
Where to Place the Numbers
-
Both sides, or stern for other ships: Planing ships and PWC must display the number on both sides. All other ships may use both sides or the stern. QLD does not copy Victoria’s “forward of the beam” rule.
-
Above the waterline: Numbers must be placed above the waterline in a fixed position where they remain visible when underway.
-
Registration label: The label issued by MSQ must be displayed on the port side or on a side window if available.
Colour, Font and Layout
-
Block characters: Letters and numbers must be in block characters, clearly legible.
-
Strong contrast: Choose a colour that strongly contrasts with the hull — black on white hulls, white on dark hulls.
-
One straight line: Numbers must be displayed in a single horizontal line, not stacked or curved.
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Characters smaller than required
- Low visibility colours
- Numbers under the waterline or behind fittings
- Curved or stacked layouts
These can result in fines, safety delays or difficulty identifying your vessel during urgent situations on the water.
What to Check Before You Buy
When ordering custom registration decals for Queensland vessels, check that:
-
Characters meet the s37 height for your class — 150mm planing ships (other than PWC), 100mm PWC, 75mm all other ships.
-
The design uses a straight, one-line layout (not stacked or curved).
-
You can apply them above the waterline and in clear view — both sides, or the stern if your vessel is in the “other ships” class.
-
The colour contrasts strongly with your boat hull for maximum visibility.
-
The material is premium outdoor-rated vinyl that resists UV exposure and saltwater deterioration — and replace faded or peeling stickers promptly.
Note: We cut boat rego stickers to published Queensland heights in outdoor-rated German vinyl. Confirm your vessel class with MSQ; we are not a government agency and products are not government-certified.
