Compliance for Inflatables and Small Craft

Mechanically propelled inflatables, tinnies, and aluminium boats must display registration numbers just like larger vessels. In most Australian states, the same character height applies (typically 150mm for boats). Very small craft or those classified similarly to PWC may use 100mm—check your state authority for your vessel type.

Marine Vinyl vs Other Materials

Marine vinyl (like ORAFOL) is the preferred material: UV-resistant, saltwater-tough, and flexible enough for inflatable surfaces. Avoid cheap stickers that fade quickly or peel. Our marine vinyl is designed for harsh Australian conditions and adheres well to PVC, Hypalon, aluminium, and painted hulls.

Surface Preparation

Inflatable Boats (PVC/Hypalon)

• Clean with mild soap and water, then dry completely
• Wipe with isopropyl alcohol for final degreasing
• Ensure no wax, silicone, or UV protectant residue
• Consider an adhesive promoter for flexible substrates (follow product instructions)

Aluminium Hulls (Tinnies)

• Remove oxidation if present (chalky surface)
• Light sanding (800-1000 grit) on bare aluminium improves adhesion
• Painted or anodized aluminium: clean with alcohol and apply
• Dry, smooth surface is essential

Installation Tips for Inflatables

• Partially inflate – Apply when the boat has some shape but isn’t fully taut, to avoid excess tension
• Avoid over-stretching – Vinyl can conform to curves; don’t force it
• Extra cure time – Wait 72+ hours before deflating or flexing
• Warm vinyl – Slight warmth (hair dryer) can help on cold or stiff surfaces
